This site has copies of a large number of prints by A. Hugh Fisher, and a few drawings. Fisher was born in 1867, and began producing engravings in the 1890s. His first prints were technical illustrations of museum holdings. He became an avid printmaker, producing hundreds of prints before his death on July 2, 1945. He also wrote and illustrated books, both fiction and non-fiction; and was a poet and correspondent. His prints were frequently included in Best Prints of the Year volumes, and many museums have some of his prints in their holdings. Articles about him can be found on the Cambridge University website, at Curtiss Vintage Prints, and elsewhere.
I intend to divide the artwork by subject matter: Animals, People, Scenes and Objects. I also plan to have an alphabetic list of all titles. Most prints were titled by Fisher in the lower left margin; some I have given descriptive titles. The latter have the title enclosed in parentheses.
The core of the collection shown here was the private collection of Elizabeth and Charles Whitmore, owners and proprietors of The Print Corner in Hingham MA. They were his publishers in the United States, and were good friends of his. I am their grandson, and inherited most of these prints from them.
This is not a catalogue raisonne. I know of many prints that are not included in this list. It is, however, a more extensive collection than is available anywhere else right now. Many of the prints include notes on the number of copies printed in various states, his personal catalog numbers, and more information. Most of his prints are undated, and do not include edition information. Where I have information, I’ll include it in the comments section on each print.
The site will also include some drawings and copies of a few illustrated letters.
The site is currently being developed. Check back for more information over the next few weeks.
